Consciousness-raising for the 21st century– tools to empower and bring joy
Consciousness raising techniques were emblematic of the mid-twentieth century women’s liberation movement which brought about the rights women enjoy in the West today. These practices made women aware that they were not alone in their psychological and practical struggles, thus making visible the fact that their problems must emanate from social structures, rather than their own personal failures.
People everywhere are facing immense pressures in this challenging era we find ourselves in. Our stresses not only emanate from a cost-of living crisis, an unstable economy and uncertain futures, but also from the privatisation of stress itself and self-responsibilisation discourse. This puts responsibility for well-being and creativity entirely on the individual rather than institutions and collectives.
Nadia is one of a handful of practitioners spearheading the development of exciting consciousness-raising methodologies to address the challenges we are facing. She has been practicing in the UK and Europe over the last 10 years, delivering engaging workshops to fight atomisation and loneliness, and help build affinity and collectivity.
Over the last four years, Nadia has brought these tools to student groups at UK universities. Her approach successfully helped build student voice and tackled isolation amongst cohorts. The demonstrated effectiveness of her work has generated sustained demand, with institutions repeatedly inviting her back to expand programming and deepen work.
